La Chapelle des Moines (The Monks'
Chapel) was built on a rocky spur overlooking the Mâconnais
landscape.
Saint-Hugues, an early Cluny abbot, enjoyed relaxing at Berzé's small hermitage and meditating on the fate of the European order. When the chapel was destroyed by a thunderstorm, Saint-Hugues
commissioned its reconstruction. But it would fall upon his successor to oversee decoration of the chapel by Italian artists during the first half of the 12th century, which explains the heavy
Byzantine influence. www.art-roman.net
